Behind the scenes...
Schloss Ambras Innsbruck has a large number of historic tiled stoves, which are located in the rooms of the Upper Castle. In their different styles from the 16th to the 19th century, they vividly document the art of stove building from the time when the castle was used for residential purposes. Their elaborate decoration, their colorfulness and their iconographic program also make them representative objects.
In addition to these complete stoves, there is also an extensive collection of dismantled tiled stoves. Since May 2022, this art-historically most significant collection – with tiles made by famous masters as Bogner, Gantner and Fleischmann – has been restored by Prof. Erich Moser, master potter and restorer of historic tiled stoves, with the support of the ‘Landesgedächtnisstiftung Tirol’.
The aim of the largescale restoration project is to return the tiled stoves to their original location in the Upper Castle as far as possible.
